sleeper review

Sleeper movie

  • Director: Woody Allen
  • Actors:  Woody Allen, Diane Keaton
  • Publication year: 1973
  • The average score of Sleeper on IMDB:  1.7

Synopsis: In 1973, Miles goes to the hospital for an operation. Something happens, and he is frozen for another two hundred years.

Sleeper is a futuristic sci-fi comedy in which a grocery store owner is frozen in 1973 and unfroze two centuries later in 2173. America 2173 has a totalitarian government ruled by a tyrannical dictator. The film’s purpose is to depict the troubled future of the United States in the not-so-distant future, which also satirizes the politics and culture of the people and the country during the narrative. Sleeper is a tribute to the classic silent comedies of Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Charlie Chaplin.

Woody Allen was also influenced by the Sleepy novel by Wells, and the imaginative aspects of his film are also derived from the archetypes of science fiction in cinema. A dystopian city, machine life, simulation, etc., all pay homage to science fiction movies. Unlike Allen’s later films, Sleeper doesn’t try to explore philosophical issues or delve into human ideas like what happens in Hannah and Her Sisters. This sci-fi is a pure comedy; it makes you laugh, it has good performances, and most importantly, Allen provides a good direction.

18. Take the movie money and run

tak the money and run review

Take the movie money and run

Synopsis: Virgil is a thief who has experienced a chaotic life since childhood. He has become clumsy and cannot carry out his robbery plans well.

Take the Money and Run is Woody Allen’s second film as a director, which achieved good critical success. This film made Allen pursue filmmaking more seriously and seek direction. He was taking the money and running, making Alan realize his talents. Allen originally intended to direct the movie to Jerry Lewis. Still, things could have gone according to plan, and he led the script himself.

Take the Money and Run is a hilarious pseudo-documentary about the life of a criminal named Virgil Starcole. Unlike other Woody Allen films, Take the Money and Run does not focus on New York, the city’s artists, and rich people; instead, it goes into the life of a loser. Virgil was born into a low-income family and a violent society. From a young age, he was involved in street gangs and made a living by stealing. Virgil is a product of the chaotic environment around him. Woody shows this sociological view amusingly and profoundly.

stardust memories review

Stardust Memories, also known as Stardust Memories or Stardust Hotel Memories, is a comedy-drama that Woody Allen considers one of the best works of his career. Nevertheless, the film faced a cold reaction from the critics at the time of its release. It was never included among his prominent works. After seeing the film, critics claimed that Stardust Diaries was an autobiographical work based on Woody’s own life, a claim that Woody has consistently denied.

Aklili’s memoirs, similar to Alan’s heavy films, have many themes. The film deals with topics such as religion, God, philosophy, existentialism, psychology, and war, points to many questions about the meaning of life and Death, and examines the role of luck in life. Sharon Stone plays a role in this film for the first time. Like all of Woody Allen’s works, Stardust Memories is a tribute to other film directors. This film, shot in black and white, is reminiscent of Federico Fellini’s eighty and a half.

16. Manhattan Murder Mystery movie

Manhattan Murder Mystery movie

Synopsis: A couple who live in the same apartment suspect the Death of their neighbor’s wife and seek to find the secret of her Death.

When Woody Allen wrote the script for this movie years ago, he thought during the rewriting stage that the story was not worth making. But years later, he rewrote the script at Diane Keaton’s request and decided to make it.

Alan was going through a difficult time in his personal life when making Manhattan Mystery. He had problems in his marriage with Mia Farrow; that’s why Manhattan Mystery was made under the influence of his mental condition. Manhattan Murder Mystery combines drama, suspense, mystery, and Woody Allen’s clever humor. In this film, Allen looks at Hitchcock’s Rear Window and pays homage to the cinema of Orson Welles, Billy Wilder, and Bob Hope. The characters in this movie are beautiful and deeply treated, and the film slowly pulls the audience in to witness a fascinating work in the comedy world.

It may be hard for us to imagine, but people could enjoy something they could only hear. This movie is a mild comedy; there is no news of psychological ideas or deep philosophical issues. Whatever it is, the passionate tone of nostalgia engages the audience. Critics consider Radio Days to be Allen’s answer to Fellini’s Amarcord, which is also very boldly crafted. zelig review

Zelig film

  • Director: Woody Allen
  • Actors: Woody Allen
  • Publication year:  1983
  • Average rating of  Zelig on IMDB :  7/7

Synopsis: A man has a strange quality; he becomes similar to everyone he meets.

Zelig, told in the style of black and white newsreels of the 1920s, received critical acclaim after its release and was nominated for several awards, including Oscars for best cinematography and costume design. This film, which is a fictional documentary, tells the story of a man who becomes like him whenever he is around someone. Leonardo Zelig has the character of a chameleon whose behavior and thoughts lead the film toward work with the idea of an identity crisis. Leonardo has no identity and is famous for being a chameleon worshiper. This approach subtly draws the movie towards the criticism of the celebrity world.

Zelig is one of Woody Allen’s most complex, funniest, and intriguing films ever made. The extraordinary technique has turned the film into the best fake documentary in cinema history after Kane’s fellow citizens. Zelig’s use of natural and artificial images, passionate interviews, and some significant special effects will remain memorable. In 1983, this film was known as a technical work, but now it looks like a masterpiece. When Woody Allen made this movie, he had made Annie Hall and Manhattan and experienced their success. After making Zelig, he explained that he wanted to make an experimental work after those successes; that’s why he thought of Zelig.

13. Bananas movie

bananas review

Bananas movie

  • Director: Woody Allen
  • Actors: Woody Allen
  • Publication year:  1971
  • Bananas average score on IMDB:  6/9

Synopsis: After his political fiance leaves him, Alan goes to a South American country for his taxi and gets involved in a political rebellion.

Muses is a comedy-drama that Woody Allen made based on parts of Don Quixote. The title of the film is also an irony. Banana is used colloquially to mean crazy, and in its other meaning, it refers to the banana republic, a subtle reference to the failed governments of the American Genoese. When Alan was asked why he named this movie Banana, he said: There is no banana! After Allen’s answer, critics considered the film a tribute to the Marx brothers. They attributed the reason for naming the muses to their coconut show.

The storyline of the movie is simple. After a revolution in a Latin country, a New Yorker travels there to impress his ex-fiancé and, through funny events, reaches the president. The film received very positive reviews after its release. Empire magazine recognized it as one of the 100 most comic films in the history of world cinema. Bananas is a pure comedy that presents political themes with solid humor. By making this film, Allen reached a new stage among absurdist comedies. He depicted a satirical story beautifully. Like many of Allen’s early films, Muses is a mix of good jokes, terrible jokes, and wacky fun.

12. Bullets Over Broadway

bullets over broadway review

Bullets Over Broadway movie

Synopsis: A young writer needs money from a gangster to perform his play. When he stages the play, he realizes that the gangster’s assistant has a great theatre talent.

Bullets Over Broadway is a dark crime comedy that offers a fascinating mix of humor and gangster ideas. Still, there is a problem here that does not allow David to do his work in the best way: Valenti wants his girlfriend. to play the leading role in the show. Allen creates exciting situations in this film, begins comedy out of a series of contradictions, and reaches a subtle satire on the wrong job positions in society.

Bullets Over Broadway is one of Woody Allen’s funniest films, in which, like many of Allen’s works, New York is portrayed with character. Woody Allen, as always, provides an attractive direction in this narrative. This film was nominated for seven Oscars, including best screenplay and best director. Diane Wiest, who gave one of her most attractive performances in this film, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

11. Sad Yasmin movie

blue jasmine review

Blue Jasmine movie

Synopsis: After her husband’s bankruptcy, Yasmin lives in her adopted sister’s apartment, which is at the bottom of the city.

Blue Jasmine is a comedy-drama that gained widespread critical acclaim after its release. Cate Blanchett won the Oscar for Best Actress, and Woody Allen was nominated for Best Screenplay. The film was also very successful at the box office; the budget of 18 million dollars against the 100 million dollar sales of the film was a shocking success. The film’s story is about a woman named Yasmin who lives in Manhattan with her husband, Hal, and has a lot of wealth. But when Hal is arrested for fraud, he goes to his sister’s house. The film’s story is narrated as a flashback so the audience can be informed about the events of Hall’s life and his work.

In this situation, Yasmin suffers a nervous breakdown and cannot pull herself together and cope with her new life. He loses everything at once and sinks into agonizing despair. Blue Jasmine is very similar to and inspired by Tennessee Williams’ bus film Lust, but it cannot be said that the film is completely adapted. What will stand out here is the charming acting of Cate Blanchett and Sally Hawkins. These two are incredibly strange and fascinating. They have understood how to bring the audience into Allen’s game and make the world of the film more tangible and understandable.

Synopsis: Three sisters fall apart after the sudden divorce of their parents and cannot return to stability before this incident.

Interiors, Woody Allen’s first drama film, was met with widespread critical acclaim at its premiere. When making this film, he announced that he would make a work without using standard comedies and that he was trying to make the interior spaces only a drama. Dramatic, personal, dark, serious, and realistic, this film was hailed by critics as another facet of Woody Allen’s talents. Interiors, like some of Allen’s films, draw heavily on psychological ideas and are more dramatic than his other films.

The film shows a family from the upper social class who cannot achieve stability to continue living despite having money and welfare resources. In this film, Allen makes a realistic examination of a broken and dysfunctional family and criticizes upper-class families. The interior spaces are a tribute to the dark world of Ingmar Bergman’s filmmaking, which, of course, sometimes leans toward Chekhov’s world. The film received five Oscar nominations, two for Best Director and Best Screenplay for Allen.

9. Love and Death movie

love and death review

Love and Death is a satire on Russian literature. Woody Allen shot this movie in France and Hungary. He later explained that he completed one of the most challenging projects of his working life by making this film. Several film negatives were lost during the shoot, and the weather and food conditions were so harsh on them that Allen vowed never to film outside the United States again. However, Woody Allen considers Love and Death the funniest movie he has ever made. The film pays homage to the humor of the Marx Brothers, Bob Hope, and Charlie Chaplin and is inspired by the dialogues of novels such as War and Peace, The Brothers Karamazov, The Gambler, and The Idiot.

In some scenes of this film, the audience will see Allen’s tribute to Bergman and the film Razmana and Potemkin. Technically, this film is one of Woody Allen’s most successful films, and it is considered an attractive work in terms of direction and narrative style. The humor in the movie is very subtle, and like other works of Alan, it takes us to a dark world. Allen won the Silver Bear for this film at the 25th Berlin Film Awards.

Husbands and Wives movie

  • Director: Woody Allen

The film’s plot is straightforward, and Woody thoughtfully writes about the separation process. He also puts the marriage and relationships between people under the microscope by paying attention to these four main characters.

Unlike other works of Alan, this film is simple and does not contain complex philosophical thoughts. Husband and Wife was made shortly after the end of Alan and Mia Farrow’s relationship; they ended their years of collaboration after making this film. Filmed by Carlo De Palma, the film uses a handheld shooting style and features documentary-like interviews with the characters. 7. The final score of the movie

match point review

Match Point movie

  • Director: Woody Allen
  • Actors: Scarlett Johansson
  • Publication year:  2006
  • The average score of Match Point on IMDB:  7.6

Synopsis: Chris is a tennis coach who, when he gets involved in two parallel relationships, decides to end the situation anyway.

The final score is a psychological thriller that critics see as a sequel to Crimes and Misdemeanors. This movie is more entertaining than crimes and doesn’t drown in philosophical and dark issues. It doesn’t look at Bergman’s cinema either. In this film, Allen is inspired by Dostoevsky’s Crimes and Punishments. He revisits themes such as the existence of justice in the world. In both movies by this director, a murder occurs, and the narrative takes a pessimistic look at fate, loyalty, and human nature. The film’s story is that Chris marries a rich woman from an influential family and kills his lover so as not to jeopardize this marriage.

At first, Allen was supposed to shoot this film in New York, but this did not happen due to financial problems. He was forced to shoot in London in exchange for using English actors and agents. He quickly rewrote the script for a British setting, as he had always had a particular personality for New York. Critics welcomed the film’s British scene and saw the film as a return to form for Allen. The final score was viral among American critics and the best Woody Allen films.

6. Cairo Purple Rose movie

The Purple Rose of Cairo movie

In its first release, this film won the Best Film award at the BAFTA event. Woody Allen was also nominated for Best Screenplay at the Oscars. Allen always mentions this film as one of his best works. He said that Purple Rose is one of the few films in his career he wanted to make with all his heart.

To write the screenplay for this movie, Alan locks himself in the room for a long time to take the border between reality and fantasy into his story. He mixes comedy, drama, romance, reality, imagination, and fantasy ideas in this film. He reaches a narrative affected by marital problems. Mia Farrow gives one of her best performances here, and Allen is very precise in his direction. The Purple Rose of Cairo is a lovely and funny work. A romance that will bring countless emotions to you.

midnight in paris review

Midnight in Paris movie

Synopsis: A writer who goes to Paris with his fiancee finds himself in many distant years.

Midnight in Paris is a fantasy comedy film that follows the story of a screenwriter who encounters strange events on his trip to Paris. In the middle of the night, he mysteriously finds himself in the 1920s. Paris becomes seductive to the audience and the story’s hero in these moments. Cloudy skies, streets, Parisian architecture, and magnificent and spectacular places make Midnight in Paris a magical movie. This film is a love letter from Allen to Paris, the Paris of the twenties, where artists and writers are also at the center. Showing an American’s love for Paris in this work can be very interesting, especially since Gil is Woody Allen.

The story’s hero goes to the golden age of Paris, meets his favorite artists, and finally becomes enchanted by what he saw and drowns in Parisian beauty. The film, screened at the Cannes Film Festival for the first time, was praised by critics and won the Oscar for best screenplay. Allen used the reverse method in writing this film’s script and wrote the film’s plot around a movie titled Midnight in Paris. In fact, according to a name, he sought to write a plan. The time travel sections evoking 1920s Paris were published in Ernest Hemingway’s 1964 memoir. The film’s directing style emphasizes romantic and realistic elements rather than fantasy elements.

4. Crimes and misdemeanors movie

crimes and misdemeanors review

Crimes and Misdemeanors movie

Synopsis: Martin, experiencing an unfaithful relationship, decides to kill his lover.

Crimes and Misdemeanors is one of Woody Allen’s influential films that critics widely praised at the time of its release. The film received three Oscar nominations and was recognized by many critics as Woody Allen’s best film. After facing the early rough cuts, Woody Allen decided to re-shoot many sequences and tell the story differently. Crimes is an intense film, a true classic, dark and cynical, telling the truth about the world around us. The film starts with themes of crimes and punishments by Dostoyevsky and Bergman and gradually reaches existential ideas.

In this symbolic film, Allen shows his talent in combining drama and comedy and enters a dark world with a parallel narrative. Martin Landau plays a doctor who kills his lover before revealing her secrets. After his decision, Alan raises issues such as self-awareness, conscience, morality, God’s punishment and justice, and whether a person can continue to live by committing a crime without others knowing or not. Although Allen’s script is sometimes funny, it never amounts to a slapstick comedy and balances a comedy and a tragedy. His staunch critics believed that Allen’s crime film was the only work in his career that correctly used humor to tell a tragic story.

3. Hana and her sister’s movie

hannah and her sisters review

Hannah And Her Sisters movie

  • Director: Woody Allen
  • Actors:  Michael Caine, Maureen O’Sullivan
  • Publication year:  1986
  • Average rating of Hannah and Her Sisters on IMDB:  7/8

Synopsis:  Hanna, who lives with her new husband, Elliott, seems to have a good life. Meanwhile, Elliot falls in love with Hannah’s sister, Lee.

Hannah and Her Sisters is a comedy-drama that tells the intertwining stories of a large family over two years, most of which revolve around Hannah’s character. The film is bittersweet and about three very different sisters. Hana’s husband falls in love with his wife’s sister, Lee, and Holly is jealous of Hana’s life. The film begins and ends with a family Thanksgiving dinner. Woody Allen’s direction in this film is similar to his direction in Annie Hall: attractive and stunning, and the actors’ performances can also be looked at very promisingly.

In this film, Woody Allen, like his other works, gives character to New York and creates a good mood. This film, whose comedy part makes me blush in favor of its drama, asks questions about the meaning of life, love, Death, and relationships, which, of course, has the answer.

This film was recognized as one of the best sellers in American cinema for a long time due to its tremendous sales at the box office. Allen was inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander to make Hanna and her sisters. Still, the similarity of this film is felt with Rocco and his brothers by Visconti. Woody Allen was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director and Screenplay for making this film.

2. Manhattan movie

manhattan review

Manhattan movie

Synopsis: Isaac, who has a troubled professional life, enters a relationship with a seventeen-year-old girl after leaving his second wife.

Allen’s love for New York City has never been more romantically displayed than in this full-fledged romantic comedy. This movie is considered a love letter to New York City. Woody Allen introduces New York as a character by using the type of filming, decoupage, city bustle, and black and white images. Manhattan can be considered one of Woody Allen’s most acclaimed works, which pays tribute to one of his favorite places on the planet. The film was controversial due to its portrayal of Allen’s relationship with a 17-year-old high school student. Still, aside from that, the film has much more to offer.

Set in New York City, Manhattan, it tells the story of a 42-year-old television comedy writer, Isaac Davis, amid his relationship and personal struggles. One of the central themes discussed in Manhattan is thought-provoking. Isaac is exposed to a group of very understanding friends who discuss art, literature, and philosophy. The film taps into the fascinating idea that intellectual endeavors can bring a sense of purpose and satisfaction in life. In addition to the film’s themes, Manhattan is known for its memorable and humorous dialogue, which shows signs of Woody Allen’s writing style.

1. Annie Hall movie

annie hall review

Annie Hall movie

  • Director: Woody Allen
  • Actors: Woody Allen
  • Publication year:  1977
  • Average rating of Annie Hall on IMDB:  8

Synopsis: Alvi Singer, who recently lost her relationship, is trying to discover why.

Woody Allen took a step towards a more reliable path in the film world by making Annie Hall. Technically, this film was a significant improvement for this director because Gordon Willis was responsible for shooting the film. In this film, Alvey Singer, a Jewish comedian, tries to understand why his relationship with Annie Hall ended so quickly, like his previous marriage. There is a lot of talk about this film; critics see Annie Hall as an experimental work in some ways due to the film’s weak narrative in some sequences. Some others put it in the category of biographical works due to the film’s similarities to Alan’s life.

Woody Allen repeatedly praises Manhattan and New York in this movie and treats it like a character. Among the best films of his career, Annie Hall is Woody Allen’s favorite film. The script of this movie is also recognized as the funniest screenplay ever written by the Writers Guild of America. In 1992, Annie Hall was also registered in the Library of Congress’s list of significant historical and cultural works. The film won four Oscars, and Allen was nominated for Best Actor. Upon its release, the film received widespread acclaim from critics, who praised the irrepressible and subtly subtle absurdity of the film.

common questions

1- What are the best Woody Allen movies?

Among Woody Allen‘s best movies, we can mention Annie Hall, Manhattan, The Purple Rose of Cairo, and Hannah and her sisters.

2- What is Woody Allen’s latest movie?

Rifkin’s 2020 film festival is Woody Allen’s last film to date.

One Comment

  1. That was perfect. Woody Allen’s arrogance and the fact that he is not a person who can easily be tolerated are clear from his film. Still, considering his genius, these two morals are understandable.
Regarding the rating, Mach Point’s rating was much higher than it deserved. But Annie Hall is right first. The film was far ahead of its time for the non-prosperous and non-intellectuals. Even though I saw it a few years ago, it still has something to say and is one of the best romances in the world.
